Graceland University (IA)

Black Pinpoint 1 University Place | Lamoni, IA | 50140

01. Overview

What the school is known for:

Graceland University is 鈥渁 small school with high morals鈥 and a 鈥渇amily-oriented atmosphere鈥 in a small Iowa town (though the School of Nursing is located in Independence, Missouri). Affiliated with the Community of Christ (formerly known as the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints), the school promotes 鈥渃loseness, community, acceptance, and growth鈥 in 鈥渁ll aspects of a college education.鈥 Students appreciate the fact that 鈥淕raceland does not use any teacher鈥檚 assistants鈥 and 鈥減rofessors take the time to get to know the students and take interest in their success.鈥 However, some would prefer a 鈥渕ore challenging鈥 curriculum. Students agree that the halls are 鈥渢he school鈥檚 greatest strength鈥; thanks to them, 鈥渘o one is left out and there are always people there if you need help.鈥 鈥淭he one thing I enjoy the most about this school is the relationships I have with my professors,鈥 says a sophomore. 鈥淢ost create close bonds with students and really care about your welfare and success.鈥 Graceland鈥檚 鈥渧ery personable鈥 administrators 鈥渢ake the time to get to know the students鈥 as well.

06. Student Body

What students say:

Graceland is 鈥渃lose knit鈥 and 鈥渉as a wonderful, welcoming community vibe鈥: 鈥淵ou can get to know everyone.鈥 Of course, that means that 鈥渆verybody knows everything about everybody,鈥 but 鈥測ou get used to that.鈥 While 鈥渢here are a lot of religious students,鈥 there 鈥渋s a high level of tolerance for those who do not fit into the mainstream.鈥 The majority of students are 鈥渙utgoing, friendly, [and] very approachable.鈥 Graceland does have a 鈥渧ery diverse campus鈥 with students from over 40 different countries. 鈥淭here are so many different people from all over the world, and it鈥檚 amazing how everyone seems to get along with one another,鈥 reports one student. 鈥淧eople are so nice and friendly,鈥 agrees an international student.

08. Campus Life

What students say:

The 鈥渧ery beautiful鈥 campus 鈥渉as a friendly atmosphere鈥 and 鈥渁 strong residence life program.鈥 Greek life is nonexistent; instead, a House System promotes 鈥渁n amazing sense of community鈥 for all students. Extracurricular activities abound. 鈥淚t is a small school so anyone can get involved with anything.鈥 For diversions, Graceland 鈥渂rings a lot of entertainment to campus such as comedians, dances, and hypnotists.鈥 鈥淒ances, the Wednesday-night movie, [and] sports鈥 are popular social activities, and all strictly prohibit 鈥渄rinking, smoking, and drugs.鈥 鈥淣o overnight guests of the opposite sex鈥 are allowed in halls, either. Some report that their 鈥渟ocial life revolves around the one bar in town,鈥 while others prefer the 鈥渓ess popular [but] fun alcoholand smoke-free club called Choices.鈥 Though Lamoni is a 鈥渟mall town,鈥 students skirt the blues by taking 鈥渞oad trips to Des Moines or Kansas City.鈥
