Grand Valley has 22,035 students, with over 19,000 undergraduates and more than 2,900 graduate students. The student body is approximately 60% female and 40% male, with a majority of students coming from Michigan, representing nearly every county in the state. GVSU has students from all 50 states and nearly 600 students from 45 different countries. The current student body is Grand Valley's most diverse ever, with 75% white, 9% Latino or Hispanic, 8% Black or African American, 4% multiracial, and 3% Asian.

GVSU has more than 400 registered student organizations, 37 club sports, 28 intramural sports, and 19 Esports teams. Lakers participate in 22 men's and women's NCAA Division II varsity sports and Grand Valley students can attend all regular season home contests at no cost. Students also are able to attend regular music, dance, and theatre productions on campus as well as other student life programming such as concerts, movies, and other campus life events. Grand Valley has a vibrant fraternity and sorority life on campus.

With this 鈥渁lways kind鈥� group, 鈥測ou never feel like you can't ask someone for help or guidance when you need it.鈥� The campus has a generally 鈥渙pen and friendly atmosphere,鈥� and due to GVSU鈥檚 size 鈥渢here is a community for everyone.鈥� Plus, the school 鈥渨orks hard to ensure everyone feels like they belong.鈥� That鈥檚 good news because students 鈥渧ary from different ethnic background, cultures, [and] families,鈥� even if some students admit that for the most part this is a 鈥渕ainly white student body.鈥� Others claim you鈥檒l find 鈥渁 good mix of conservativism and free thinkers鈥� on campus. Either way, people 鈥渁re active when not studying in the amazing library,鈥� but most people 鈥渄on鈥檛 party too hard鈥� and 鈥渟eem to enjoy smaller group settings.鈥� One Lake sums Grand Valley up: 鈥淭he school is just big enough that we do not have to worry about small school drama where everyone knows everyone, but not so big that I do not see any of the same people each day.鈥�

With more than four hundred student organizations and intramural sports, 鈥渟tudent life thrives on campus鈥� and there's 鈥渁 lot to do always,鈥� particularly when you factor in what nearby Grand Rapids has to offer. Speaking of which, in addition to 鈥渓ots of internship and volunteer opportunities,鈥� with 鈥渁 popular and safe city nearby,鈥� students have access to 鈥渢he full college experience鈥� and can 鈥済o downtown and spend time at a local coffee shop [or] at a sports or music event.鈥� On campus, 鈥渆verything is very updated and modern鈥� and 鈥渄orms are nice and a good size for freshmen and upperclassmen.鈥� Generally, students 鈥渒eep to themselves and study and then get together on the weekends.鈥� Other activities include the 鈥渧ery popular鈥� football games, as well as heading 鈥渢o the recreational center to exercise or participate in a group class, or [getting] involved with an on-campus club.鈥�
