Mississippi College (MC)

Black Pinpoint Box 4026 |

01. Overview

What the school is known for:

With a small campus, caring professors, and a tight-knit student body, "The Mississippi College community is more like a family" than a traditional undergraduate institution. Affiliated with the Mississippi Baptist Convention, the school offers a range of major programs in the liberal arts and sciences, in addition to "outstanding" business and nursing degrees. As a small school, students are pleased to find that Mississippi College "branches out to cutting-edge medical research, award-winning fine arts programs, and so much more." Faith and values are integrated into the curriculum, creating the "perfect balance between high quality academics and a Christian environment." Some students admit there is a "fair share of boring or monotone professors" on staff, though the majority of MC instructors are "very passionate and engaging." Experts in their fields, most professors "have a good grasp on their subject matters and try to make things simple to understand." Outside the classroom, students benefit from ample "individual attention" from friendly professors who are "always available and willing to help you." Across disciplines, "Small class sizes" help facilitate discussion and promote a "positive and upbeat learning environment where the material comes to life." As a result, "You leave the classroom feeling like you really learned something." A current student says, "I have no doubt that MC is preparing me for my future."

06. Student Body

What students say:

MC is a "good 'ol Southern Baptist school," which principally attracts "kind and outgoing" students "from a Christian background." "Most students at MC come from middleto upper-class families," and the general populace "went to a private school or was home-schooled" before starting college. There are "many beautiful people" at Mississippi College, and most students are "preppy" and well dressed. People tend to conform to the same general style, and "The ones who dress out of the norm get attention, usually negatively." "Many students join tribes, which are like sororities and fraternities," and through which, "They automatically join a large group of friends." Politically, most students are "right-wing conservative," though there are some more moderate viewpoints also represented on campus. While MC community is better suited to some students than others, there is a diversity of interests and personalities on campus, and "the campus offers multiple opportunities to find your niche."

08. Campus Life

What students say:

Most MC students "really concentrate on doing well in our classes," yet manage to maintain a balanced lifestyle. In addition to their studies, "People love the social clubs (kind of like sororities and fraternities)," and, due to the school's religious affiliation, "attending Christian activities and performing community service is a priority for many students." To sweat out the stress, "Students love to play ultimate Frisbee on the quad," and "Intramurals are a big deal." Drinking and partying are less popular at MC than other colleges, though some students convene at local bars, and it is "not uncommon to find a party" on or off campus. During the evenings and weekends, there are plenty of "school-wide functions, such as homecoming parades, football games, [and] tailgating." For a chill Friday night, students "have little dinner get-togethers," "just hang out, or go get coffee and talk." Surrounding "Clinton is a small town," but "There are a few good restaurants and a movie theater" near campus. For a little more excitement, there are "Quaint antique shops, shopping, historic sites, clubs," and other more cosmopolitan options in Jackson, just 15 minutes down the road.
