Northwestern College (IA) (NWC)

Black Pinpoint 101 7th St SW | Orange City, IA | 51041

01. Overview

What the school is known for:

Iowa鈥檚 Northwestern College is a small Christian school of around 1,000 undergraduates associated with the Reformed Church in America, offering 鈥渟pectacular academics,鈥 an 鈥渁uthentic staff,鈥 and 鈥渁 lot of different traditions that combine to create many activities that are extremely fun.鈥 Academics are 鈥渢ough, but in the best way possible.鈥 The curriculum 鈥渆ncourages us to pursue our faith through our academics,鈥 and classwork often asks that students reflect on how their Christian faith is 鈥渃onnecting with literature, translation ethics, evolution, rhetoric, social justice issues.鈥 Students also cite the resources available to them across campus, including 鈥渁n incredible student tutoring program鈥 wherein those individuals 鈥渨ho succeed in classes are selected as tutors and assist other students in their coursework.鈥

Going along with that are the 鈥渉elpful, understanding, positive, cheerful, and informative鈥 professors at Northwestern. Students say professors 鈥渁re committed to learning how their students learn best and take the time to help each student get the most out of their courses.鈥 Classes incorporate numerous teaching materials, including 鈥渇ilm, literature, or hands-on learning,鈥 and some even end up 鈥渦sing the outdoors as an extension of the classroom.鈥 Several others 鈥渕erge different subject areas together to make a new way to think of things.鈥 The school 鈥渄oes a wonderful job at offering a variety of opportunities for spiritual and faith development,鈥 and many courses 鈥渋ntegrate case studies to encourage students to apply what they are learning to real-life situations that could occur in their future profession.鈥

07. Mental Health

08. Campus Life

What students say:

The school sits in a small town, so 鈥減eople are really good at coming up with their own forms of entertainment.鈥 Much socializing is done over food, and students 鈥渢ry to gather as many people together for each meal, including the secret fourth meal of the day: Pizza Time.鈥 Even regular activities are far from mundane: students 鈥渓ove going to the local coffee shop to get off campus,鈥 鈥淲almart runs are pretty common,鈥 and 鈥渂oard games are also popular.鈥 When it鈥檚 warm out, 鈥渢he green is a popular place for hammocks, slacklining, spike ball, and other activities.鈥 Turning inward, the school has 鈥渁mazing facilities and [seems] to always be getting new buildings on campus,鈥 and 鈥渢he vast majority of people are involved in extracurriculars such as athletic teams, choir or band, or theater productions.鈥
