St. Norbert College is a small Catholic liberal arts school just outside of Green Bay, Wisconsin that 鈥渇ocuses on service and community鈥� and boasts 鈥渁 very personal educational environment.鈥� 鈥淧rofessors know your name鈥� here. A broad core curriculum emphasizes writing and includes 鈥渁 couple鈥� of mandatory religion courses. 鈥淪tudy abroad is incredible,鈥� enthuses one student. 鈥淵ou can go pretty much anywhere in the world.鈥� Also, 鈥渕ost students graduate in four years, many with double majors.鈥� Some faculty members are 鈥渧ery nice people鈥� but 鈥渢errible at teaching.鈥� However, most 鈥渞eally work hard for the students鈥� and are 鈥渋ncredibly approachable.鈥� 鈥淚t鈥檚 totally normal to go to a professor for help.鈥� The biggest academic complaint at SNC is the 鈥渟lim鈥� course selection. 鈥淭here are many courses that sound interesting but, when you are finally able to take them, they are not being offered and won鈥檛 be again for another year or two.鈥� Also, science labs are 鈥渨orn out鈥� and 鈥渢erribly out of date,鈥� explains one student. Administrators 鈥渃an sometimes be frustrating.鈥� 鈥淭hey like to deliberate on really inane things for inordinately long periods of time,鈥� explains a philosophy major. That said, 鈥渕ost will sit and listen to you鈥� if you take the initiative.

Students say that there are some 鈥渟notty鈥� kids 鈥渇rom wealthy families鈥� at St. Norbert, but it鈥檚 mostly 鈥渇riendly, ambitious, and fun鈥� 鈥渕iddle-class鈥� students from 鈥渟mall town Wisconsin鈥� and the suburbs of Milwaukee, Chicago, and Twin Cities. 鈥淐ultural diversity is definitely lacking.鈥� 鈥淧retty much everybody looks alike鈥� except for a smattering of international students. They mostly 鈥減ack together and no one talks to them.鈥� 鈥淎 typical SNC student is usually either a studious individual or a hardcore partier,鈥� says one undergrad. 鈥淢ost students are your involved types,鈥� adds a junior. 鈥淭hey were very involved in a number of activities in high school and continue to be involved in college.鈥� Politically, the campus is 鈥減robably a little more conservative鈥� but there are plenty of liberals, too. Half the student body is Catholic.

The campus is 鈥渂eautiful, small, and clean,鈥� while the dorms are less so. 鈥淢y mom went to St. Norbert and says the same dorms that I have lived in were nasty when she was here,鈥� gripes a junior. Also, 鈥渁 revitalization of the athletic facilities would be a welcome change.鈥� Students really rave about SNC鈥檚 鈥渃lose-knit鈥� community, where 鈥淵ou know everyone and they know you.鈥� Clubs and organizations are plentiful. 鈥淚f you are outgoing and love to get involved, you can go very far,鈥� promises a junior. Athletics are 鈥渉uge.鈥� The football team is historically pretty good and 鈥渉ockey games are a blast.鈥� Religion is noticeable, but it鈥檚 not pervasive. A plethora of 鈥渟ervice opportunities鈥� allows students to volunteer locally as well as around the country and abroad. The party scene here is 鈥渟omewhat lively.鈥� There are 鈥渢hose who party hard and others who don鈥檛 at all.鈥� For the drinking crowd, bars and parties thrown by the localized Greek system are popular. 鈥淎lternative nightlife鈥� includes movies, concerts, and a decent array of on-campus activities. 鈥淭here is no need for a car鈥� at SNC but, if you鈥檝e got one, Green Bay is just down the road.
