Class sizes at the University of Alaska—Fairbanks are small "even [at] the 100-level." The professors "not only have book smarts but real-life experience in their fields." In general they "invite comment, make sure there is time for discussion, change the direction of the class based on student interest and make themselves available to help." In addition to small class sizes students here benefit from faculty who "are very excited about their subject matter," which "makes for a great learning environment." They "are extremely accessible and supportive" and "will go out of there way to make sure you know the material and you will pass the course." Although there are reports of "some average professors," with regards to the "upper-level and major-specific classes," overall professors here are "academically stimulating and an excellent resource." It has been noted that, in the field of petroleum engineering specifically, "it seems as though [the professors] focus more on the theoretical side of things instead of the practical side."

Students here joke, "If you love hockey or science, UAF is your Ivy League." The student body enjoys "sledding and skiing," "renting movies from the library, getting some pizza from the dorm area cache and having a little movie night with friends," as well as "making new friends when it's minus 40 outside." Students say a good deal of unity is derived from attending school in a climate that requires a cheerful disposition and tolerance for cold weather. As one student comments, "for the most part during the middle of the school year you do not see what the students look like. We all fit in; we're so covered up to combat the cold." Students enjoy both the camaraderie and intimacy of the student body: "For the most part all students seem to be able to fit in here. This school is a small school where you all know each other."

Life on campus at The University of Alaska—Fairbanks is comprised of an intimate, active community. Students highlight on-campus gathering spots which include "the arcade, pool table, and bowling alley…in the student center," as well as "the pub" at the student center, which is only for those that are 21 and older, and which "only serves beer and has events like musical concerts and other activities." Intramural sports "are pretty popular" with a focus on "broomball, ultimate Frisbee, and rugby." Students also like to "just get together in social groups, such as clubs and other student organizations." UAF also "brings up great speakers." Both "the student government and individual departments sponsor many events throughout the year for students to get out and meet new people." Students derive immense joy from their use of the recreation center and the gym facilities, "which seem to be hidden gems on campus." Due to the occasionally intense winter conditions, most students "try to stay active outside and inside." Aiding this effort is "a group called Outdoor Adventures. They rent almost any outdoor gear available to students (for cheap), and this allows them to easily get out all over Alaska and have some fun." The group also organizes "all sorts of outdoor trips from white water kayaking to a week long hiking trip in the mountain ranges to ice climbing classes and ski classes."
