University of Jamestown (North Dakota)

Black Pinpoint 6081 College Lane | Jamestown, ND | 58405-0001

01. Overview

What the school is known for:

For Jamestown students, the university is "is literally a home away from home." The school is "small, friendly, [and has a] family-like environment" where "everyone cares about you." Founded by the Presbyterian Church, Jamestown provides "a well-rounded education within a Christian atmosphere, equipping students with the tools they will need both in their home and work lives." A significant portion of the students come to Jamestown for either "the most intense, high-esteemed nursing programs in the area" or its athletics. "Our school is about athletics and coming together as one, even if you aren't an athlete," says one student. The school also "provides generous scholarships." "Many of the professors are just lecturers," but they "always have their doors open" and "will do anything to help us achieve our career goals." Students did wish the administration wasn't "so uptight" and want the school to do a better job of "going green!!" "You're not a number [here]….at University of Jamestown you have a name, and they get to know you as a person." "I choose Jamestown because of the unique atmosphere," shares a cross-cultural communication's major. "It's a smaller campus, and I felt like they wanted to know me and help me succeed!" In short, many students think University of Jamestown "is the Midwest's best-kept secret!

06. Student Body

What students say:

Students at Jamestown "are mainly your 'down-home Americans.'" "The typical University of Jamestown student is friendly," and "wherever you go, you are greeted with a smile." The student body is "mostly Caucasian" and "generally pretty conservative" as well as "friendly, family-oriented, fun, energetic, studious, and hard-working." "Students fit in really well; there are tons of organizations and opportunities for everyone to find a niche." Although one student cautions that "most students are very religious, and if a student it not religious they are looked down upon." If you are not very religious, it can be "difficult to fit in." "A large portion of the students are here for athletics or at one time were associated with it," and "usually 95 percent of the students are either here for nursing or athletics." "For the most part, everyone gets along with everyone including the professors" making it "like an extended family here."

08. Campus Life

What students say:

At Jamestown, "many organizations promote weekend activities such as dances, game nights, and Wii parties to get students to stay on campus." Perhaps the effort is unnecessary as "the town doesn't offer a lot of activities" and "has nothing exciting in it, but a Wal-Mart," so students "don't leave campus a lot." Luckily, students find plenty of fun things to do in addition to organized events such as "chalk art, baking, movies, and Taco Bell." "A lot of movies are watched, and in the summer a lot of ultimate Frisbee is played. During the weekends, the hot ticket items are sporting events and a trip to Applebee's." Taco Bell and Applebee's may be especially appealing as "the cafeteria really lacks and could be greatly improved." "Most study and get their work stuff done on the week days and then party it up or have relax time on the weekends," explains one student. Jamestown is "a community, everyone knows each other," and "the students are all close, both studying together and spending recreational times together."
