Wartburg College (WC)

Black Pinpoint 100 Wartburg Blvd. PO Box 1003 | Waverly, IA | 50677-0903

01. Overview

What the school is known for:

Wartburg College, located in Waverly, Iowa, is a liberal arts school that does an 鈥渁mazing job incorporating faith鈥 into the classroom. Some of the greatest strengths the college possesses are 鈥渇aith, service, personal connections, and job placement.鈥 The music education and music therapy programs are 鈥渇antastic,鈥 as is the Wartburg choir. Plenty of non-music majors are attracted to Wartburg for the opportunity to participate, to perform, and to 鈥渂e a part of music.鈥 The biology, pre-professional programs and athletic programs are also stand out offerings. Students like 鈥渢he small community aspect, which also means a small student-faculty ratio鈥 with 鈥渙ne-on-one time with professors.鈥 Students typically feel that faculty members 鈥渉ave large hearts鈥 and 鈥渁 genuine interest in how their students are getting along in their classes and how they are doing.鈥 Certain departments, including education, 鈥渄o a great job of getting you out in the field right away to make sure that you have the experience needed,鈥 and academic advisors provide truly 鈥渋ndividualized meetings and scheduling鈥 options. Wartburg emphasizes community service and what the college can 鈥済ive back to the community is something rare and incredible.鈥 Offerings include 鈥渉elping to train service dogs, opening up the wellness center to the community,鈥 and raising 鈥渁wareness for multiple causes.鈥

06. Student Body

What students say:

The majority of students are 鈥渇rom small towns in Iowa and either participate in sports or music.鈥 Students form close ties, with some observing the tendency for 鈥渃liques to form,鈥 especially among athletes and musicians, citing this is notably apparent in 鈥渄ining areas.鈥 Wartburg students are a 鈥渃ommunity of scholars鈥 who 鈥済o out of their way to do community service.鈥 As for diversity, one student notes that, although the school is 鈥渕ostly white, 鈥 [there are] still many international students, students of color, [and] students of different cultures.鈥 However, another expresses the desire for more: 鈥淚 wish there was more diversity among my peers in regard to race and religious backgrounds, and more inclusiveness to students that are part of the LGBT community.鈥

08. Campus Life

What students say:

Wartburg is located in Waverly, a 鈥渟mall town,鈥 so there is 鈥渘ot much to do鈥 but students 鈥渕ake [their] own fun.鈥 Students attend 鈥渂aseball games and wrestling matches,鈥 鈥減lay sand volleyball鈥 in the warmer months, and 鈥渟hoot hoops and run in 鈥榯he W鈥 wellness center, a community and student exercise facility center.鈥 One Wednesday of the month is devoted to 鈥渄ollar movie nights,鈥 and students will go to 鈥淛oe鈥檚 Knight Hawk bar on Saturday evenings,鈥 鈥渁 highlight of most people鈥檚 weeks.鈥 Students looking for a little more excitement can take trips to 鈥淐edar Falls and Waterloo, which has the mix of downtown and social life.鈥 Dorms have 鈥渓ounges with a T.V. and a game table of some kind.鈥 Students hope that 鈥渄ining services鈥 and 鈥渇ood options鈥 improve. They love the 鈥渟kywalks鈥 that connect the buildings, but also note that some facilities need some upgrades.
